Rescue

I came across a “verse of the day”. It was 2 Tim 4:18

2 Timothy 4:18 NASBS
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

For you Lifeway Biblical Skills Mens Group members, here’s a good example of looking at “Morphology,” our recent study. The Greek word “rescue” is in the middle voice, which means somebody else performs the action, but I participate in it.

The definition for rhuomai (rescue) is “to rush or draw (for oneself) that is rescue: – deliver”

The root word of “rhuomai” also means to “draw” like water or “flow.” We hear about “rivers of life.” This shows us that God’s rescue flows from him like a river.

To participate in God’s rescue:
1. I need to recognize evil. If I don’t see the evil, I can’t respond to God’s drawing.
2. I need to allow rescue. Just because God draws you to safety does not mean it will happen. You need to participate in it. Remember the middle voice?

Let’s also check this out. Am I the one who is doing evil deeds here? No, the case, gender, and number doesn’t agree with “me” in the verse, but only “deeds” here (more morphology). God is wanting to protect you from evil and harm.

So much meaning packed into one little verse . . .
